Kings complete the razing of eastern Canada

On Sat, Dec 14, the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Ottawa Senators by a final score of 5-2. With that victory, the Kings effectively went through all the eastern Canada based NHL teams, like a hot knife through butter.

The trip began on Tuesday, with a contest against the ridiculously hot Montreal Canadiens. After an uneven first period, the Kings buckled down, and put a surgical 6-0 whopping on the NHL's most storied franchise.

The very next night, the Kings went into Toronto and marched out with a 3-1 victory over the Maple Leafs.

The most recent game could have been viewed as a "trap game" for the Kings. Los Angeles could have been caught looking ahead to a big Sunday showdown in Chicago against the defending Stanley Cup champs.

There was no need for such worry. After the first period, the Kings led 3-0, en route to a 5-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Los Angeles is playing the game at an extremely high level. Responsible in all three zones, and strong in net despite the absence of Jonathan Quick. This is the stuff of which championship teams are made.

Perhaps another key, is the continuing development of power forward Dwight King. Originally a late season addition in 2012, he played well during the Stanley Cup championship run, but then followed that up with what many felt was a rather indifferent season in 2013.

This season, King has seen time on the top two lines, and has scored 8 goals in 33 games. He had a goal and two assists against Ottawa - His assist to Anze Kopitar, on the Kings' fifth goal was an absolute beauty, which led to King being named #1 star of the game. Kopi was #2, Doughty #3.

L.A. outscored Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa, by a total combined score of 14-3, have won six straight games, and captured at least one point in 17 of the last 18 games.

Goaltender Martin Jones was in goal against Ottawa and is now 5-0 in his first five NHL starts, with a .967 save percentage, and 0.99 goals against avg.

The table is set for the big Sunday game in Chicago against the team with the best overall record in the NHL.
