38 Studios' assets, including intellectual property for 'Kingdoms of Amalur', will be held Nov. 14-15, according to the Heritage Global Partners listing that went live today. 'Kingdoms of Amalur: Project Copernicus', is officially up for grabs. This is the MMO that was in development before 38 Studios closed. The game itself was shaping up to be a visual work of art, however the game is incomplete. Buyers will also have the opportunity to claim sequel and merchandise rights to 'Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning' (the studio's sole release).
In June 2012, 38 Studios filed for bankruptcy and Rhode Island was stuck with an unpaid loan. At the time of filing for bankruptcy 38 Studios said it owed The Rhode Island Economic Development Corp $115.9 million, including interest and other payments over the life of the loan. Along with the debt the state of Rhode Island also inherited the rights of 'Kingdoms of Amalur' IP and other intellectual property from failed '38 Studios'.
This auction should defray some of the debt Rhode Island taxpayers inherited when 38 Studios was dissolved. Other assets in the auction include intellectual property rights for Big Huge Games' properties, such as Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends and Catan as well as the studio's Big Huge Games Engine and 38 Studios' Helios platform.
