Executive produced by former NBA star Steve Francis and TV execs Antonne Jones and Michael Gerald, "King on 34th" is a new fashion reality show and competition coming soon to a major network. Up-and-coming fashion designers work in small groups to complete weekly challenges and face eliminations. Competition leads to conflict, and there are clashes amongst the contenders and the judges. The show stars FUBU's J. Alexander Martin, and features fashion industry insider Alisa Maria (The Alisa Maria Collection). Pop culture expert Brian Balthazar hosts. Of the contestants, Alisa Maria states "They were amazing. So much talent. I was really amazed. You'll get to see on the show. It's really hard... we had times where we [as judges] couldn't decide."
J. Alexander Martin described what differentiates the show from other design competitions: "The other design shows are more geared toward the designers that have been out there. These are more students of fashion. They're younger. We get a chance to mentor and push them and guide them, and tell them what's really going to happen in this business. You really get to see how people react to turmoil and it's really crazy."
The winner of "King on 34th" receives a financial benefit, ongoing mentorship from J. Alexander Martin, the opportunity to create and launch a fashion line, and more. Says Martin: "I give out about $5,000 in legal advice. Most people understand the fashion aspect, but they never understand the business. I had to teach them the business one by one. It was great."
The reality show screening took place on October 9th at Studio XXI (59 W. 21st St.), and was attended by Love Majewski (VH1's "Mob Wives"), model and author Tanyka Renee, Naughty by Nature's Vin Rock, JT Talent's John Thomas, actor Grizz Chapman ("30 Rock"), fashion designer Shelly Bromfield, physician and author Dr. Georgina Rose, celebrity publicist Marie Driven, comedy writer Jeffrey Gurian, RaChristian's Rashawn West, and others.
