On December 15th Coconut Grove’s venerable and unpredictable King Mango Strut appointed and anointed 2 local comics as their Grand Marshalls for the 29th edition of the wacky satirical march through the streets. http://kingmangostrut.org
For the Strut organizers the yearly theme means nothing more than simply a focus for media to help frame the shenanigans. For the Grand Marshalls it means waving from a vehicle.
This year’s parade theme ‘Restoring Humor’ is not only a reference to the Glenn Beck ‘Restoring honor Rally’ and Jon Stewart ‘Rally to restore Sanity and/or Fear’ but a real call for laughter in these stressed economic times.
Yamil Piedra and Johnny Trabanco a self professed ‘Pair of Nuts’ have been friends since childhood and a comedy team since 1998 in college. They have been featured on the national stage in Daniel Tosh’s ‘Tosh.O, ‘Last Call’ with Carson Daly, BET, VH1, Discovery Channel and more.
Their viral videos have found their way to YouTube, MySpace and Funny or Die. They perform an amalgamation of humor transcending their Spanish roots with a universal appeal. If you have ever transcended Spanish roots, you know what a thrill/job that is.
Their live stage show is an award-winning multimedia sketch comedy show that combines live sketches, short videos, music, and numerous costume changes. If they attempt any multi-media from the convertible, it will be another performance feather in their caps.
They’ve headlined at some of the top comedy clubs in the U.S. and have performed at military bases and colleges nationwide, receiving standing ovations whereever they perform. They’ve been invited to perform at the Los Angeles Comedy Festival, the Los Angeles Improv Comedy Festival, and the Miami Improv Festival where they won “Best South Florida Performance,” and headlined the preview night at Comedy Central’s South Beach Comedy Festival.
They are the stars of the Spanish language sketch comedy show on MegaTV “El Vacilon,” where they won a Sun-Coast Emmy Award for writing.
Bringing a new style of comedy never before seen in the Spanish market, they worked with some of the biggest Hispanic celebrities including Wilmer Valderrama (That 70’s Show), Tony Plana (Ugly Betty), Luis Guzman (Carlito’s Way), and Steven Bauer (Scarface) and the VH1 reality show Money Hungry.
Being selected as the Grand Marshalls will either be stutter step on their path to fame or just another off-beat accomplishment for this ‘Pair of Nuts’. http://nutscomedy.com
