On Jan. 1, Amazon kicked off the new year by offering college students a Kindle Fire HD discount, which knocks $50 off their 8.9-inch tablet for a new promotion
The deal is until the end of the month, and is only for Amazon student members with a Prime account. The service is free of charge for the initial six months and $39 a year when the trial period expires after signing up with an ".edu" email.
The discount is for the Wi-Fi and 4G LTE versions of the device, according to SlashGear. When the discount is applied, the price is only $249 for the 16GB Wi-Fi-only version, which is the same price as a 7-inch 32GB model Kindle Fire HD.
The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD is definitely a high-performance tablet that rivals the Apple iPad. It has a 1,920-by-1,200 resolution, fast Wi-Fi streaming and downloading, and a Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 processor. Other features include Dual Dolby Digital Plus stereo speakers, a battery that can last 10 hours along with a front-facing HD camera, and the Amazon-exclusive X-Ray for Movies feature.
