At first the plague stays in the poor ends of the city, but it slowly creeps up into the very heart of London and onto Hannah and Sarah's doorstep.
The author is able to show the real horror of the epidemic from the smell of the streets to the overflowing graveyards--the reader will be able to see just how terrible the plague was in 1665.
