A kindergarten teacher discovered two of her students, naked, in the classroom's bathroom. The students told her they were "having sex." The teacher has been suspended with pay but now may be fired, according to the New York Daily News on Feb. 24.

Mullica Township, N.J. Education Association President Barbara Rheault said that Kelly Mascio “acted in a professional manner and responsibly reported the incident.” However, many feel that parents might no longer be able to trust her leadership and supervision.

The school board met to discuss the situation in a closed session. About 200 people showed up in support of Mascio, but the situation was not discussed with the public.

Superintendent Brenda Harring-Marro issued a statement; however, she refused to specifically comment on this case.

The district takes its responsibilities very seriously regarding the health, safety and welfare of our children,” she said, adding they do not comment on specific personnel matters. “Simply stated, it would be unprofessional and irresponsible for anyone associated with the school district to speak about school district students or for others to seek to capitalize on that unprofessional and irresponsible behavior.”

Harring-Maro later added that “public reporting of this matter is neither complete nor accurate.” No additional information has been forthcoming.

On the surface it looks bad for the teacher, especially considering that the bathroom was inside her classroom and not out in the hall. She didn’t notice two of her students missing at the same time? These kids are five years old. Are there too many students in her classroom? Did she have a classroom aid? Until more information surfaces, there are more questions than answers. Obviously, something fell through the cracks.

Kelly Mascio is a popular teacher in the district and has been teaching there for 16 years. The investigating police officers have not charged her with any crime.
