On Saturday, September 21st at 7:30pm (6pm Red Carpet), Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center will host the premiere charitable screening of Susan Seidelman’s (Desperately Seeking Susan) inspiring dance film, Musical Chairs. The film is the story of two driven people who are worlds apart from one another, yet share the common passion of dance. Tragedy creates a tenuous bridge between the unlikely pair and they must trust in and depend upon each other in order to overcome their personal fears and face their individual challenges.
Janet Carrus, founder of The Gerald And Janet Carrus Foundation and co-producer of Musical Chairs, informed that “the trigger for this story was a result of working on a project/event for a gala for the ‘Center for Discovery’ in 2004.”
For more than 60 years, The Center for Discovery has provided service to “children and adults with severe disabilities, medical frailties, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Center offers educational, clinical/health, residential, and family supports in addition to other programs and services. The Center features universally designed facilities specifically built to meet the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and creative needs of the children and adults it serves.”
Janet was honored when the Center asked to recognize her at the gala, but Carrus wanted to be more than just a “talking head” in front of the crowd. “I wanted to do something that would emphasize the potential of the residents, no matter what the extent of their disabilities.”
“There was an overwhelmingly positive response from everyone, the participants, the staff, the audience, Carrus recalled. “That made me realize the true power of dance, music, and the vast possibilities of what someone can achieve regardless of their disability, gender, and culture. I also realized what incredible tools music, dance, romance, and humor are for bringing awareness. That feeling was so strong that it developed over time — without letting go — and through a series of events from the writer, to the director, to the cast and the crew, what we have today is the film Musical Chairs.”
“Through the Gerald and Janet Carrus Foundation, I have been able to give a voice to those organizations and projects which, without our support, would not have achieved a sense of recognition and value. It is a sense of accomplishment knowing I have empowered individuals and projects whose present resources are often limited due to cultural and/or societal indifference. The Foundation has no geographic limitation on the foundation’s grants.”
Proceeds from the Philadelphia Musical Chairs screening will benefit the Crossroads Adaptive Athletic Alliance and the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities (MCPD) that provides scholarships to students with disabilities.
