Kim Kardashian and Kanye West may be most watched pregnancy since Lucy and Desi (Video)

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have made it official, they’re expecting their first child. Kanye West made the announcement during the middle of his concert in Atlantic City last night, according to TMZ. Rapper Kanye spilled the news by pausing in the middle of a song on stage and saying, “Stop the music and make noise for my baby mama”. Apparently Kim had no idea her boyfriend was going to let the public know she's pregnant just yet, but since friends and family of both were in the audience, Kanye saw it as the perfect opportunity to share their good news. The Hollywood Reporter advises us to, “Get ready for what could be the most publicly observed pregnancy in history”. This could turn out to be the most watched pregnancy perhaps since Lucy and Desi’s pregnancy was played out on 1950s television.

Sources tell TMZ that Kim Kardashian had no clue Kanye was about to tell the world their news. The pair were planning to wait until she started showing. But since Kim’s best friend and mom Kris Jenner were there along with several of West’s family members, he just couldn’t resist sharing their good tidings.

Kim apparently didn’t mind the surprise announcement as she was crying tears of joy after his revelation. Kim was really moved too because Kanye did it in the middle of his song “Lost in the World”, which is one of her favorites.

As soon as the news hit, music mogul Russell Simmons tweeted congrats, as did Kim’s sister Khloe. Fans joined in on the Twitter blessings, and mom Kris Jenner tweeted, “Oh BABY BABY BABY!!”.

Rumors the two were planning to get pregnant have been circulating for months. Kim has dropped hints on her “Keeping up with the Kardashians” show, as well as on her “The View” appearance.

Kardashian was seen visiting a fertility clinic on her reality show back in September. Kim was supposedly just there as moral support for her sister Khloe, but many saw it as a cover up for her own visit there where she had fertility treatments.

Also in September, during Kim’s appearance on “The View”, Elisabeth Hasselbeck asked her if she also sees kids, family and soccer games in her future, and Kim answered “Absolutely”.

Then in October, Kim Kardashian posted a Twitter photo of herself playing the “baby ring trick”. The game is usually played by expectant moms trying to guess the gender of their unborn babies. Accordingly the tweet sent Kimye baby rumors soaring into the stratosphere.

The fact that pal Beyonce and sister Khloe have started families was also a strong incentive for Kim to settle down and start a family too. Kim’s admitted weight gain also sparked rumors she might be expecting.

For those too young to remember, back in the early 1950s, the top show on television was “I love Lucy”. Real life couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz played husband and wife Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.

When Lucille Ball became pregnant with her first child just before filming the pilot, producers hid the pregnancy from television audiences. The pregnancy resulted in the birth of the couple’s first child, daughter Lucy Arnaz.

During the second season, as shops and businesses would close early on Monday nights so everyone could go home and watch “I love Lucy” on CBS, Lucy was pregnant again with second child Desi Arnaz Jr..

This time they made the bold move of writing the pregnancy into her character’s storyline. Lucy Ricardo was “expecting” as well, since back then you could not even utter the word pregnant on TV.

The show had already busted open doors by portraying their real life marriage on air, since it was still considered racy to show a marriage between a white American woman and a Cuban man on TV.

Already the ratings-blasting leader, “Lucy Goes to the Hospital" was watched by more people than any other television program up to that time. 72 percent of all American television sets tuned in, topping the 68 percent for Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration coverage the following morning.

It remains to be seen how Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s pregnancy will compare, but given the amount of publicity the two generate, they just may well give Lucy and Desi a run for the money.

Twitter and other social media make it a whole different landscape than 1950s television, and there is of course another contender to deal with. Kate Middleton and Prince William may trump Kim and Kanye in the baby news department.

Kim and Kanye began dating in April 2012, after being good friends for years. Kim is still technically married to NBA player Kris Humphries, whom she separated from after just 72 days of marriage in 2011.

The next divorce hearing is set for February 15, and the pregnancy may give new motivation for Kim and Kris to finally wrap things up.

Congratulations Kim and Kanye!
