According to report today from VG 24/7, Killzone: Shadow Fall developer Guerrilla Games developed the game alongside prototypes of the PlayStation 4’s controllers, sternly rejecting one that had touch-sensitive buttons.
Killzone: Shadow Fall lead designer Eric Boltjes said Guerrilla Games wanted to actively participate with Sony and PS4 system architect Mark Cerny on creating a better controller for the next-gen console because in previous Killzones the DualShock was good, but other controllers had an edge.
“We really worked together with Mark from Sony on improving the controller,” Boltjes said. “For example, the triggers: We wanted better triggers. They previously reverted inwards where, in a shooter game, that’s not very good. Your fingers slip off.” Boltjes said Guerrilla really pushed Sony to improve the triggers.
Other things like the touch-pad first puzzled Boltjes, saying, “When I first saw it on the prototype controller I was like, ‘What the hell am I supposed to do with that? It’s not an iPhone game.’”
But Boltjes said he eventually came around on the touch-pad, and he is “really happy with how it works” in Killzone: Shadow Fall.
The touch-sensitive buttons, however, were a no-go for Boltjes and Guerrilla.
“We just said, ‘No,’” Boltjes said.
Killzone: Shadow Fall, a PS4 exclusive, hits shelves when the next-gen consoles launches in North America on Nov. 15, in Europe on Nov. 29 and in Japan in February.
