The show’s promo keeps telling us “eight weeks, eight killers” and this episode hits the ground running with a murder in the opening moments. An assistant district attorney is shot down during her wedding and the female shooter sprints out of the church and jumps into a getaway car leaving only her shoes behind. Several people follow her out, guns drawn and shoot at the fleeing vehicle.
It is revealed shortly after this that the killer works in a gym owned by the groom. She made 9 calls to him before the wedding. Could she be a scorned woman or something else? Texas Ranger Molly Parker will find out in spite of San Antonio Police Lieutenant Guillermo Salazar’s misgivings. He makes no secret of the fact he doesn’t like her.
The shooter is caught and confesses within the first minutes of the show as well. It is her relationships with the others in her orbit that keep the show going. She is likable but lacking any real stakes to lose if things don’t work out. She and her state senator husband are nearing a divorce – one he doesn’t want. She is on good terms with her brother and his wife. Where things could get interesting is in the affair she’s having with DEA agent Dan Winston but not so much in this first episode.
There is tension between her and her male counterparts but it doesn’t amount to much. She tries to come across as a rule breaker who will do whatever it takes to get the job done but ends up coming across as tame.
All new shows take time to develop and we hope this one can do in its 8-week run. Watch for “Killer Women” to premiere Tuesday, January 7 at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC. Until then, keep checking back here for more news, updates and spoilers as they become available.
