Parrish Bennette is the convicted killer, but the killer's attorney Thomas McNair said on Friday that it was he and another defense attorney who kept the victim's body location hidden from police per Fox News.
Bennette pled guilty Thursday in Oregon to manslaughter of his 14-year-old victim Yashanee Vaughn. He killed the girl in 2011, leaving her body in a two-foot unmarked grave.
His lawyer had hoped to persuade the judge to give the convicted killer a shorter sentence by declaring the defendant was unaware of the decision made by counsel to withhold the victim's body location from police. But the plan didn't work, and Bennette, 17, was sentenced to 17 years prison time, with no possibility of early release.
The defendant didn't make a statement at his sentencing, and the victim's mother was too overwhelmed to speak during the proceedings. But Fox News says Shaquita Louis opened up afterward, saying "I didn't get to bury my daughter like she should've been buried and for them to know and to keep his mouth shut, it does not make no sense."
Attorney Thomas McNair withheld the location of the dead body of a young victimized girl in order to try and use it as leverage in securing his client's freedom. The victim's great aunt Marsha Hayes said "That is sick. That is inhumane."
McNair and his fellow defense attorney could have brought some measure of peace and comfort to the victim's family by disclosing to law enforcement where to find the child's body, and they chose not to. And for four long months her family wondered if she was a runaway or had really met with foul play. And that makes the attorney actions almost as wicked as that of their client.
