A new report out of Alaska indicates that a killer was issued a razor before his suicide last year. Israel Keyes confessed to multiple murders, and at the time of his suicide he was in “punitive segretation” at an Anchorage jail where items such as razors should have been prohibited. The Anchorage Daily News shared the details about the razor issue on Feb. 13.
The report indicates that Israel Keyes was not supposed to have a razor, but a corrections officer gave him one and forgot to retrieve it. The serial killer then used it to slit his left wrist before he strangled himself with a bed sheet. At this time the corrections facility is not commenting on whether the overnight checks were done properly, where the prisoner would have been checked on throughout the night. They have also not commented on when or how the killer was issued the razor before his suicide.
The spokeswoman for the facility, Kaci Schroeder, has also declined to state whether anyone was disciplined or fired in relation to the incident. She said, however, that there are new procedures now put into place as a result of the Keyes suicide. Israel Keyes admitted to killing Samantha Koenig, as well as Bill and Lorraine Currier.
Keyes also admitted there were others he had killed, perhaps as many as eight other people, and investigators were still trying to get that information from him at the time of his suicide. Now that he has killed himself, there are numerous families who will likely never have answers about their missing loved one. Many online commenters would like to see more transparency from officials involved in this regarding just how the killer was issued a razor before his suicide, and why the situation wasn't rectified before Keyes killed himself.
