Memphis Animal Services has “been in the news for years for cruelty and starvation of animals, statistics that don’t add up, missing dogs, stolen pit bulls, disease outbreaks” warn animal advocates aware of the goings on.
Now, it seems a recording was made last night by a MAS employee of a direct order to “kill all pit bulls or anything that looks like a pit bull.” This order didn’t come down from the shelter itself, but instead from a “of Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton’s administration.”
This is the same administration of the mayor who “on his first day in office in 2009, told the media and a crowd gathered that he planned to take the shelter from ‘worst to first.’” This statement came directly after a huge raid.
"In 2009, the shelter was raided by Shelby County Sheriff's deputies who found multiple instances of animal cruelty. This was prompted by a photograph released of a mixed-breed pit bull puppy that had been starved to near death along with two others."
In light of current outrage against breed specific legislation, namely Team Pit-a-full’s global effort to finally end the Denver pit bull ban, most politicians would wisely choose to steer wide of breed controversy. Mayor Wharton doesn’t seem affected by the fact that there are great numbers of people who share their homes with America’s first native dog breed and will most likely not appreciate their Tennessee cousins being mass slaughtered because the town council thinks they look like 'pit bulls'.
With this operation put into practice, there is no need for breed specific legislation. Taking it to another level, that of an all time low, like the man says, 'kill all pit bulls...or anything that looks like a pit bull." There are no English words to describe the profound immorality of this recording.
