After finishing as the Class 5A runner up to Henry County in 2011, the Powell Panthers have had a tough time keeping a football coach.

The Panthers will be looking for their fourth head football coach in the last four years as Tobi Kilgore has resigned after just one year.

Kilgore will become the head football coach at Karns as well as assistant principal.

The Panthers finished 5-5 this year and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

Matt Lowe stepped down after leading the Panthers to the title game in 2011.

After Lowe resigned, Derek Rang took over the reigns in 2012 and led Powell to a 12-2 season that ended with a semifinal loss to Columbia.

Rang resigned after being suspended from his teaching duties after a classroom irregularity after the season.

Then Kilgore took the job last April after being the defensive coordinator at Knoxville Central in 2012.

Cortez Hired at Lenoir City
Lenoir City's administration didn't have to look far to find their next football coach after Mike Zeller resigned after the team's Class 5A playoff loss.

Jeff Cortez, who has served as the Panthers defensive coordinator the last three seasons will be the new head coach at Lenoir City.

"I'm really excited about getting the job here," Cortez said. "I really love the school and my family loves being part of the community."

"We are going to roll our sleeves up and get to work and build on this season."

Lenoir City is coming off a 9-3 season and has made three straight 5A playoff appearances.

The Lenoir City job will be Cortez's fourth head coaching job as he was the head coach at Paraclete (CA, in 2000-02), Lancaster (CA, in 2003-06) and his alma mater Village Christian (CA, 2007-10) before heading to Tennessee in 2011.

Cortez's overall coaching record is 75-41 and he won back to back CIF Southern Section titles in 2000 and 2001 while at Paraclete.

While at Paraclete, the Spirits won 28 consecutive games as he went 34-4 overall.

After Zeller's resignation, the Lenoir City parents started an online petition wanting Cortez as the next coach of the Panthers.
