Merilee Kern, author of the award-winning children's book "Making Healthy Choices--A Story to Inspire Fit, Weight-Wise Kids", just released a unique app packed full of resources, fun and inspiration to help parents and kids "impede childhood obesity and deter bullying related thereto".
Merilee told the Examiner today that “Making Healthy Choices--A Story to Inspire Fit, Weight-Wise Kids,” has been very well received and I know it’s helped inform and inspire many children get, and stay, on a healthy track. I wanted to make that unique children’s literature resource even more affordable and accessible, so availing both the Boy and Girl editions of the book in digital form through an APP just made sense. This digital APP format also allowed me to bundle other helpful resources for both kids and parents/caregivers/educators/physicians with the book, allowing me to do more to address and hopefully impede the childhood obesity epidemic."
“Unfortunately parents tend to be reactive to childhood obesity, dealing with the problem after it manifests, rather than proactive with a preventative mindset,” notes Kern. “Many parents don’t know how to communicate with children who may be dealing with weight issues. And, while shelves are filled with books that help parents manage their child’s weight and related health concerns, there are decidedly few illustrated fictional story books or APPs available that directly educate and inspire children to live a healthy lifestyle. So I wanted to take that alternate approach to address the issue directly in a way kids could identify with and relate to. The added mobility and interactivity of an APP, combined with the additional resources, make this resource hugely appealing and helpful for kids and adults alike.”
The APP is newly available for iphone and ipad and includes six sections designed to inspire and inform users on how to live a healthier lifestyle. They include the digital eBook adaptation of both the girls and the boys versions of "Making Healthy Choices—A Story to Inspire Fit, Weight-Wise Kids.”, story discussion prompts, health-themed games and activities, kid-friendly recipes, online tools and resources for kids and caregivers, and a hotlink to the latest research and news. The book and tools are suited for kids ages 4-14 and their caregivers, however, as Merilee states, "It is never too early to raise awareness about healthy living and exactly how and when to make good choices, or too late to have deeper-level discussions on how obesity might be adversely impacting a child’s life"
