If your kids love peanut butter and enjoy time with you in the kitchen, Jif Peanut Butter has a challenge for them.
The 12th Annual Jif Most Creative Sandwich Contest lets kids submit their favorite sandwich recipe using any Jif Peanut Butter product for a chance to win a $25,000 college scholarship.
Recipes are judged on creativity, taste, visual appeal and ease of preparation. The winning sandwich in last year's contest, announced in June 2013, was the Magnificent Mole Chicken Torta.
The winning contestant, 10-year-old Jacob C. from North Carolina, won the grand prize for his creation's unique use of Jif Chocolate Hazelnut spread in the mole sauce.
This year's contest is now open to children between the ages of 6 and 12. Parents or legal guardians can access the contest entry form at the Jif website.
Each contestant will create a unique sandwich with an original name and parents can submit the recipe and photo to the Jif website to enter the contest.
This is a great opportunity for kids to share their culinary skills and have fun creating a unique sandwich. The contest ends Nov. 8, 2013 and 10 potential finalists will be chosen by the end of November.
Here's the winning recipe from last year to help you get started.
Magnificent Mole Chicken Torta
3/4 cup pulled rotisserie chicken, heated
1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, halved
1 bolillo roll, sliced lengthwise
3 avocado slices
1/2 cup thinly sliced lettuce
1/8 cup chopped tomato
Dollop of sour cream, optional
2 tablespoons minced onion
1/4 teaspoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread
1/3 cup condensed tomato soup
Juice of half a lime, about 2 tablespoons
1/4 cup chopped green chili peppers
1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon dried cilantro
Generously spray a small sauce pot with cooking spray, and saute minced onion and garlic over medium-high heat until tender. Stir in 2 tablespoons of Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread, tomato soup, lime juice, cumin, cilantro and green chili peppers. Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove sauce from heat. Toss half the sauce with pulled chicken, and place mixture on the bottom half of the roll. Top with cheese slices and place sandwich open-faced under a toaster oven or broiler for 2-3 minutes until cheese melts. Remove sandwich from oven and place sliced avocado on top of melted cheese.
Then add lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and the top half of the roll. Use remaining sauce as extra sauce if desired, or to make another sandwich.
Now it's time for your kids to get started. Begin with any Jif Peanut Butter product and let your child's imagination do the rest.
