Young Chicago artists (Kindergarteners through eighth graders) are invited to enter oil pastel artworks in the 15th Annual Cray-Pas® Wonderful, Colorful World Contest 2010 organized by Sakura of America.
Along with a downloadable Certificate of Participation, kid artists (and their teachers) can receive awards including cash prizes, sponsor prizes, and Sakura art materials.
How to enter art contest for kids
Visit the contest Web site to download the 2010 CrayPas Entry Form and read the complete rules for this kid contest. The entry deadline is December 11, 2009.
To enter, young artists must create a picture that is drawn mostly with oil pastels (preferably Cray-Pas) and measures no larger than 12" x 18" and no smaller than 8" x 10". Kids can also use secondary art materials such as pen and ink, pencils, and watercolors in their artworks.
Students enter this art contest for kids by grade level – K to 2, 3 to 5, and 6 to 8. Artworks must be mailed flat to Sakura, not rolled, and teachers or parents submitting children's art should follow the entry checklist provided at the Web site carefully. Entries may be "inspired" by another photo or picture, but children must not copy the other image exactly and must credit the source of inspiration properly. Only one entry per child is allowed.
Kids art contest judging and prizes
Entries will be judged by criteria such as the originality of the image, the artist's creativity, the emotional content of the artwork, how well the artist works with oil pastels, and age appropriateness. See the contest Web site for full details of how and when winners will be chosen and what prizes will be awarded to children, teachers, and schools.
Judges will chose 150 finalists (50 from each age group), 24 Honorable Mention award-winners (chosen from the pool of finalists), and 9 winners (3 from each age group, also chosen from among the finalists). The teachers and schools of the winning children will receive prizes, as will one teacher whose name will be randomly drawn from the pool of all teachers who have submitted artwork from their students.
Cray-pas resources
The downloadable entry form includes two sidebars with illustrated explanations of several Cray-Pas techniques. Visitors to the Sakura Web site can also check out a History of Cray-Pas and Cray-Pas Lesson Plans.
Chicagoans can find Cray-Pas art products at area Michaels and Blick art materials stores. Blick stores are having a fall sale through October 11, 2009.

In 2007, the Children's Art Work festival was inaugurated, not only to encourage artistic and talented children through the opportunity to display their artwork, but also to provide fostering opportunities for the different social and sporting clubs allover Egypt to participate in a well organized and fairly competitive contest.
