If your older cat has been drinking more water than usual, urinating more frequently, not grooming themself, acting sluggish and especially vomiting, this may be a sign of kidney failure. Kidney failure means that the kidneys are not properly getting rid of waste from food. A type of ammonia will be released in the urine (often it has a distinct smell) and the animal's body will need excessive amounts of water in an attempt to flush out the ammonia.
Because the symptoms of kidney failure are similar to some infections, diabetes, or thyroid problems, an accurate diagnosis can only be done by a veterinarian. Kidney failure, also referred to as renal failure, can often be reversed if caught early on.
Jean Hofve, DVM, states in her article, "Feline Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) and Vaccine Link", that 'recent research from Colorado State University suggests a link between vaccination for feline distemper (panleukopenia) and the development of chronic renal failure.' Dr. Donna Kelleher, a Seattle-based veterinarian who uses acupuncture and chiropractic, says that improving an animal’s immune system will negate the need for most vaccines. Vaccines, she says, have been shown to cause auto-immune diseases. “I feel they may be responsible for arthritis, skin, liver and kidney problems as well.” One of the best things a cat owner can do to keep their pet healthy is to make sure they have clean, fresh water, exercise, and a healthy diet. Since most commercial cat foods contain byproducts and chemicals, the best diet is always a whole diet. If commercial pet food is purchased, be very careful in your choice. Jean Hofve, DVM, has an ezine article that will help you make an informed decision when purchasing commercial pet food.
In Seattle, a highly recommended place to go for alternative veterinarian services is the Animal Wellness & Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Sodhi was recently voted as Seattle's best holistic vet for the second time by the people of Seattle. Dr. Jean Hofve, DVM has a great website called Little Big Cat that is loaded with free articles and advice for pet owners looking for holistic care.
