Kidnapped child still being held hostage in bunker

Jimmy Lee Dykes, an Alabama man, still has the kidnapped boy in the bunker. Sheriff Wally Olson said Saturday that Dykes confirmed that the 5-year-old has blankets and an electric heater. This kidnapper has also allowed police to supply coloring books, medication, and toys for the child.

Olson is grateful that Dykes is “taking care” of the boy. This sheriff’s choice of words must be a negotiation tactic. Perhaps he is trying to appease Dykes who has a television in the bunker.

Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, abducted the little boy on Tuesday after killing the boy’s bus driver. The driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, actually attempted to prevent Dykes from getting to the 21 students on the bus before being shot multiple times.

The boy and Dykes have now been in underground bunk for five days, and authorities have been communicating with the kidnapper through a ventilation pipe.

“Police have used a ventilation pipe to the bunker to talk to the man and deliver the boy medication for his emotional disorders… an official also said he has been crying for his parents.”

Neighbors describe Dykes as a menacing man who has anti-government views.

Does this Vietnam-era veteran think he is still at war? Can you imagine how scared the 5-year-old must feel?
