Is your child eager to help in the kitchen? The 12th Annual Jif® Most Creative Sandwich Contest is the perfect opportunity to let your child do a little culinary experimenting, while also getting a chance to win a $25,000 college fund. Now through November 8, 2013, little chefs between the ages of 6 and 12 are asked to create a unique sandwich following the contest guidelines.
All recipes must include at least 2 tablespoons of an eligible Jif product. Parents can help their children submit their recipe using the contest entry form on the Jif website. All entries must include a recipe description, an original name for the sandwich and a photo of the completed sandwich. For complete contest rules, click here.
Sandwiches will be judged on the following criteria: creativity, taste, visual appeal and ease of preparation. Ten semi-finalists will be chosen in November 2013 and will participate in a nationwide online vote beginning January 2014. Five finalists will then be determined to attend an event in New York City, where the contest grand prize winner will be announced. The grand prize winner will receive a $25,000 college fund and a Jif gift basket. Four runner-up winners will receive a $2,500 college fund and one Jif gift basket each. And the five remaining online finalists will each receive a Jif gift basket valued at $50.
With more eligible Jif products than ever, this year’s contest is particularly exciting. Last year included the addition of Jif Hazelnut spreads. This year, the Jif family of products has extended to include new Jif Almond Butter (in crunchy or creamy), Jif Cashew Butter (in crunchy or creamy) and Jif Whip Spreads (creamy peanut butter or peanut butter and chocolate.) Not only does this offer even more options for everyone, but it also gives greater flexibility to kids with peanut allergies that might not have entered in the past.
To get your creative juices going (or maybe you’re just looking for an idea to make for lunch), take a look at some of the recipes Jif has on their website. Be sure your child puts their own twist on these recipes, however, if entering in the contest. Last year’s Grand Prize Winner, 9-year old Jacob C. from Morganton, North Carolina, created his “Magnificent Mole Chicken Torta” using Jif Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread as the base for a mole sauce, pulled rotisserie chicken, cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomato.
So grab the kids and get in the kitchen! This is a wonderful way to spend some quality time with your children. Talk about foods that they already like and flavors that might go well together. Be sure to assist them when safety is a concern, but let them run the show in this activity. This is their culinary masterpiece, and experimenting and getting a little messy is part of the fun. Remember, ease of preparation is part of the judging in this contest. Jif doesn’t want to see entries that no child could’ve played a role in making.
