If you play a tabletop RPG (role-playing game), there are a few options for gaming mats. Typically, you either draw on a blank vinyl grid with markers, use a pre-made glossy paper mat, or make something yourself with your computer or whatever drawing tools you have handy. But, what if you want the durability of a vinyl mat, but you also want the visual appeal of the glossy pre-made maps? Richard and Robin of Rat's Mats would like to introduce you to premium RPG maps.
What makes these play maps “premium”? When you head over to the Kickstarter page (link is below), watch the video to see for yourself what the maps look like, but what makes them really special is how they are made. In the maker's own words:
Our maps are printed on 100% cotton canvas, using a giclee process that injects museum-quality inks right into the fabric. The colors are bright and lively, and a light polymer coating allows them to be wet-erase safe - as well as cola/Gatorade/pizza safe. They're light and portable, but resilient enough to last a lifetime.
The rewards for the Kickstarter revolve around the “Swamp Set #1” maps. Depending on the size of the pledge, backers may receive one or two maps from the set, or the entire set. Every pledge of $10 or more includes the PDF adventure “Down in the Bayou,” which can be played using D&D 3.0/3.5 rules or Pathfinder. The maps themselves have been playtested for D&D and Traveller so far, and those who have seen the mats in person have all given very positive feedback, according to Robin.
The 12-by-24-inch mats are designed to be interchangeable with existing and future map sets. Besides the swamp, they'd like to offer a variety of environments such as caverns, jungles, the original Orient Express and an entire city block of places for adventurers to discover in a port city. If the Kickstarter is successful, Rat's Mats would like to make their products available in game stores for about $18 each. For those who are interested in turning their own maps into a premium PRG mat, there's even a Kickstarter level for those artistic GMs.
