Kickstarter: Bringing shows back from the dead

Kickstarter has become a great way for artists to get funding for various projects. People can choose to donate and are rewarded in small ways and then get the reward of seeing the finished project.

In the past Kickstarter had helped to fund independent films and student projects. Then Rob Thomas and Veronica Mars changed everything. Rob Thomas created the series Veronica Mars in 2004 and it ended in 2007. The show still retains a large fanbase and Thomas has been trying to get a movie made but to no avail. Finally Warner brothers agreed that if he could raise 2 million dollars they would distribute the film and so he started a Kickstarter campaign hoping to raise 2 million in thirty days.

In 4 days fans have already donated 3.5 million dollars.

The implications of this event are remarkable. Passionate fans might actually be able to get what they want if enough of them want it and are willing to fund it. Bryan Fuller the creator of Pushing Daisies has contacted Rob Thomas about a Pushing Daisies movie via Kickstarter and he tweeted about it. Joss Whedon, creator of the beloved Firefly Series says he feel unfettered joy over the success of the Veronica Mars Kickstarter and what it might mean for Firefly.

Whatever happens next is anybody’s guess but now its up to the fans. Who could ask for anything more?
