Kick off 2013 with outdoor adventure in Acadiana

As the hours tick down in 2012, what better time could there be to start planning great outdoor getaways in South Louisiana for 2013. Magazines at the grocery store may lure you into thinking that exciting times in the outdoors can only be found in other parts of the world, but the truth is that some amazing sites can be found right outside your back door.

Trail running:

New Year's resolutions almost always involve getting in better shape. If a running plan is on your list for 2013, why not test your first month's training at the following off-pavement events.

The Wild Azalea Trail Challenge is a 25 mile run/ride along the Kisatchie National Forest's Wild Azalea Trail. You can run or ride solo, or go with a team to compete as a relay. The scenic trail, just outside of Alexandria, LA, is host to this first annual adventure.

The Cherokee Chase 5K/10K run will be held at Cherokee Ridge Horse Farm in Carencro on January 26. The race takes you through the property and fund raised will go to help the Acadiana Therapeutic Riding Organization (501-C3 non-profit). Races begin at 9:00 AM and the registration fee is $25 in advance or $30 the day of. Email Liz Wooster at lizwooster29@gmail.com for more information.

Paddling:

Pack & Paddle is hosting an overnight paddling and camping trip at Chicot State Park on January 5. Space is limited for this trip. Contact the staff at P&P for more information.

Kayak fishing:

The Lafayette Kayak Fishing Club hosts a monthly meeting at Pack & Paddle and the January date is set for the 15th. If kayak fishing in the Bayou State sparks an interest in you, visit one of their meetings to learn from the best around.

The LKFC is also hosting a Tag Team Catch and Release Tournament on January 12 at the Choupique Bayou launch in Sulphur.

As always, the Louisiana State Park system always has something to offer the young and old alike. Chicot, Lake Fausse Pointe and Palmetto Island are all easy drives from nearly anywhere in South Central Louisiana. All three offer great fishing, hiking, camping and cabins, biking and geocaching opportunities. The key to finding these great deals on adventures is taking the first step and discovering what is right outside the city limits. You won't have to go far to discover something great in 2013.
