Kia Motors announced its first special edition Soul for 2014 - the 'Red Zone' edition - to be available in the first quarter of 2014, according to a press release on Dec. 6.
The 2014 Kia Soul 'Red Zone' will be a very limited production of 2,000 vehicles only according to Kia and is based on the distinctive Track’ster concept previously unveiled at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.
For 2014, the new second generation Soul is a bit sleeker with its lower height and longer - wider stance. It includes more premium features and improved riding dynamics with enhanced technologies including an eight-inch screen for the infotainment system and the availability of the UVO eServices telematics system.
The Soul continues to be a very hot ticket for Kia with over 111,000 sold so far in 2013 - trailing only the very successful Kia Optima in sales for Kia in North America.
With the improvements in the second edition Soul for 2014, the addition of what Kia calls 'the first' Special Edition 'Red Zone' Soul (suggests more to come), the introduction of a Soul EV to the line in 2014 coupled with rumors of a turbo power plant in the works - the Kia Soul will only improve its market share with this funky urban four-door hatchback.
“The Soul has always appealed to those who choose to express their individuality through their vehicle, and special editions have been a part of the lineup since the first-generation Soul went on sale in 2009,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “The Red Zone Soul underscores that independent spirit and brings to life many styling features from our wild Track’ster concept.”
The 'Red Zone' will be based on the 2014 Soul Plus trim level and will boast its own extroverted personality with White exterior paint and an aggressively styled body kit featuring red accents throughout, including treatment on the front grille, front and rear fascias, and side skirts.
Custom 18-inch alloy wheels will fill the wheel wells and keep the 'Red Zone' Soul firmly planted on the road. The power train will include the Kia 2.0-liter gasoline direct injected (GDI) four-cylinder engine which puts 164 horsepower to the ground via a six-speed automatic transmission.
Inside, Kia continues the distinctive look with black cloth seats featuring red stitching, leather steering wheel, black-leather dash hood with red stitching, black carpeted floor mats with red piping, and sport pedals. The shift knob ring, air vent ring, dash speakers and console tray trim have all been dipped in red paint, continuing the 'Red Zone' theme.
The 2014 Kia Soul is already collecting awards having received a 2014 Residual Value Award from ALG, a leading provider of data and consulting services to the automotive industry. The Soul earned top honors in the subcompact utility segment with a top-score-expectation that it will retain 57 percent of its value after three years of ownership according to ALG’s November-December edition.
The 2014 has also been recognized as the winner (for the second year in a row) at the 10th annual Active Lifestyle Vehicle of Year awards determined by the media and athletes following extensive evaluations.
