After months of speculation about the state of her troubled marriage, former "X Factor" U.S. host Khloe Kardashian is filing for divorce from basketball star Lamar Odom on Dec. 13, 2013. An unnamed source told E! News that the official divorce filing will come "later today" and that Kardashian and Odom (who have been separated for the past several months) tried couples therapy and were "using it as a forum to talk through all of their issues."
The therapy obviously didn't work, and now Kardashian is going to do what she has denied for months: file for divorce. Kardashian (who is 29) and Odom (who is 33) were married in 2009 after a quickie courtship. Their busy careers have often kept them apart, and tabloids have constantly reported that the couple is getting divorced.
[UPDATE: Kardashian has filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences." According to TMZ: "The couple has a prenup so division of property will be a cinch -- they kept all their property separate. And Khloe is asking the judge to take Odom out of her name, so she is once again simply Khloe Kardashian ... eliminating Odom from her life in every way. And, Khloe is NOT asking for spousal support and wants the judge to reject any bid by Lamar for the same."]
It was the first marriage for Kardashian and Odom. They do not have any children together, and her infertility problems were documented on the reality shows "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and the now-cancelled "Khloe and Lamar."
Odom has two children — Destiny (born in 1998) and Lamar Jr. (born in 2002) — with his ex-girlfriend Liza Morales, who has been in an ongoing legal battle with him over child support. The former couple also had a son named Jaden, who was born in 2005, and passed away in 2006 of sudden infant death syndrome.
In 2012, Kardashian and Odom launched a fragrance called Unbreakable Bond, which is an ironic title, considering their breakup a year later.
As previously reported, one of their biggest marital problems was Odom's reported addiction to crack cocaine.
According to a TMZ report that was published on Aug. 23, 2013, Odom has been to rehab for his drug addiction. Reports have varied about whether or not he is clean and sober, and Odom has publicly denied that he has a drug problem. The NBA suspended him twice in 2001 (first in May and then in November of that year) for drug-related violations. The NBA and its teams do not publicly disclose which drug or drugs are involved when NBA players are suspended for a drug-related violation. However, Odom later admitted to the media that his drug violations were for marijuana, and he made a public apology for his illegal drug use.
TMZ reported: "Lamar has had a problem for two years. It got so bad, last August Khloe pressured Lamar to go to rehab. Lamar went to a facility in San Diego, but he was so resistant Khloe hired private investigators to secretly stand guard at the rehab place to make sure he didn't leave. The P.I.s stood guard 24/7. Our sources say Lamar constantly threatened to leave and Khloe made several visits to prevail upon him to stay. We're told after three weeks, Lamar left for good. We're told Lamar actually stayed clean once he left rehab and was able to play well for the Clippers this past season. But when the season was over, sources say Lamar slipped deep back into hardcore recreational drugs.
"As for reports that Lamar was cheating recently, we're told Khloe is convinced it happened, and she feels she's been hit with a double whammy ... but drugs are the main problem. As for divorce ... neither Khloe nor Lamar has contacted a lawyer ... We're told the situation has become dire. Sources tell us ... within the last two days, the entire family staged an intervention, trying to convince Lamar to go back to rehab, but he wouldn't have any of it. In fact, on Wednesday morning [Aug. 21, 2013], right after the failed intervention, Khloe threw Lamar out of the house ..."
TMZ published a photo of Odom moving some of his possessions out of the house that he shared with Kardashian.
On Aug, 14, 2013, the Huffington Post reported: "Polina Polonsky is a California lawyer who, according to RadarOnline, has passed a lie detector regarding her claims that she had a six-week affair with Odom. Polonsky says the affair started on June 2, the night of Kim Kardashian's baby shower, which also happens to be the last time Khloe and Lamar were photographed together. Polonsky says she was under the impression that Odom's marriage to Kardashian was over by the time she became involved with him, when they hooked up at the Roosevelt Hotel, where he was staying around June 9."
Kardashian and Odom have not commented on Polonsky's allegations.
However, Kardashian's mother/manager, Kris Jenner, told TMZ in August 2013: "Khloe and Lamar are absolutely not getting divorced. There's been no talk of divorce."
Kris Jenner is not the most reliable source about the marital status of people in her family. In 2013, she admitted that she and her husband, Bruce Jenner, have been separated since 2012, and they lied about the separation to the public in order to keep up the appearance of having a happy marriage.
And this wasn't the only marital breakup in the family in recent years. In 2013, Kim Kardashian (one of Khloe's older sisters) finalized her nasty divorce from basketball star Kris Humphries, her second ex-husband. She filed for divorce in 2011, after 72 days of marriage.
As previously reported, on July 10, 2013, tabloids Star magazine and Radar Online (which are both owned by American Media Inc.) reported that Odom had been cheating on Kardashian for a year with a 29-year-old stripper named Jennifer Richardson. And when Kardashian found out about the alleged affair earlier this year, the spouses began sleeping in separate rooms.
An unnamed source told Radar Online: “Things have been very, very tense in the house for a great deal of time. Khloe kicked Lamar out of their bedroom several months ago and he was sleeping in one of the mansion’s guest rooms. She fears Lamar has been cheating on her with various women. It really irked Khloe when Lamar was blatantly caught going to a strip joint.”
On July 10, 2013, Odom lashed out at paparazzi who had been following him in the Los Angeles area and questioning Odom about his marital situation. According to several reports and video footage taken of the incident, Odom smashed a photographer's camera equipment and car with a metal bar. Kardashian then addressed the situation by tweeting after Odom's run-in with the paparazzi: "F*ck the papz!!!!! You f*cking losers!!!!! But shout out to my hubby for posing with the fans! I love my Lam!" When asked on Twitter about her alleged marital problems and possible divorce, Kardashian responded, “Hehehe, I just love my hubby.”
But in September 2013, it was clear that things were not well in her marriage, when Khloe (who was going by the name Khloe Kardashian Odom) dropped Odom from her name on her social media accounts. She was also seen in public sometimes not wearing her wedding ring.
Khloe Kardashian is not having a very good 2013. She was fired from "The X Factor" U.S. after getting an avalanche of complaints from viewers, who said she was a horrible and unprofessional host. Mario Lopez, who began co-hosting "The X Factor" U.S. with Kardashian in October 2012, continued to host the show after Kardashian got fired.
Khloe's bad year also included her older sister Kim getting a huge amount of publicity for being pregnant with Kanye West's first child and giving birth to a daughter named North. Even though Khloe insisted in interviews that she was very happy for Kim, Khloe has had well-publicized infertility issues and has been desperate to get pregnant, which would make it difficult for Khloe to not feel even a tiny bit jealous that her older sisters Kim and Kourtney have become mothers before she has and that their pregnancies have gotten so much media coverage.
Khloe was tainted by a charity scandal involving Odom when it was revealed by ESPN in March 2013 that Cathy's Kids, a charity founded in 2005 by Odom for cancer research, had not given any of the approximately $2.2 million it had raised over the years to cancer research, and instead used some of its money to "to finance two elite youth basketball travel teams." Although Khloe did not found Cathy's Kids, she and Odom used their fame to raise money for the organization. In a statement, the couple denied any wrongdoing about Cathy's Kids.
As much as the Kardashians expose their lives on their reality TV shows, they have chosen not to expose Khloe's serious marital problems and breakup on their reality shows. However, that could change now that the Khloe has filed for divorce and finally admitted that the marriage is over.
According to TMZ, Odom has been addicted to crack cocaine for at least two years.
In an August 2013 interview with ESPN.com, Odom's agent Jeff Schwartz admitted that Odom is battling a drug problem; he declined to say what drug(s). Schwartz commented: "Playing in the NBA is still very much part of Lamar’s plans.”
Meanwhile, Radar Online reported that OxyContin, not cocaine, is Odom's main drug of choice. An unnamed source told Radar Online: “Lamar was able to smoke OxyContin and it was detected during several drug tests. But because he had a valid prescription, it wasn’t a violation. It allowed him to skate through the system. He knew he could smoke it and get away with it."
An NBA source added, “If Lamar had been using crack cocaine, or any other illegal drug, it would have been detected during the league’s drug testing routine.”
On Aug. 30, 2013, Odom was arrested in California for DUI. On Dec. 9, 2013, he received three years' probation after pleading no contest to the DUI charge.
