As home-schoolers we know or soon find out that there are certain topics that our children don’t or won’t learn from us. For those instances Khan Academy, is your in-house tutorial resource. No going to the store to buy workbooks, or software, or putting an ad for a tutor. Khan Academy is ready when you need them.
Khan Academy is the one room schoolroom for the 21st century. Whether it is teaching of a new subject or practice for that area they offer help. And the best news…it’s free. Khan Academy is especially strong in math and sciences and is working on expanding their humanities offering.
How do you get started? Simply go to www.khanacademy.org and click the Watch button and you will be directed to their offerings. Whether it is basic arithmetic or calculus, they have engaging videos that help your child to grasp the concept. (Or if you don’t want them to know you don’t know the topic, you can learn it first and then teach them.)
Once you’ve watched the video, you can get more practice on the topic by clicking the practice button. Interactive exercise boards help your student learn
Khan Academy has test practice as well. Many home-school students may not be as familiar with testing as school going students. Use these as a practice tool to make sure your child isn’t stressed when they have to take a standardized test.
Khan Academy is a godsend to homeschoolers and should be a part of your growing repertoire of teaching tools.
