The KGA Senior Series held their final regular season tour event at The Golf Club at Falcon Lakes in Basehor, Kan. on Thursday Sept. 5. Falcon Lakes, which opened in 2002, measures between 5,226 yards on the front tees to 7,098 yards on the championship tee. Distance isn't the factor at Falcon Lakes, it is accuracy. Tall prairie grass runs along almost every fairway, which can easily lead to a lost ball from an errant shot.
In the 50 to 54 gross scoring age group Ward Zerger of Olathe, Kan. took first place shooting a two under par 70. Mark Kays of Independence, Kan. finished at three over par 75 for second place. Third place resulted in a tie between Cal Froberq of Lawrence, Kan. and Russ Henry of Wichita, Kan. both at four over par. Ron Baker of Topeka, Kan. took first place in net scoring with an adjusted score of six under par 66. Kays remained in second with a 69 and Zerger moved to third with an adjusted round of 70.
Bob Hartmann from Shawnee, Kan. shot the lowest round of the tournament at three under par 69, cementing him in first place in the 55 to 59 age group gross scoring. Second place resulted in a four way tie between Bo Dennis of Independence, Kan., Peter Robbins of Olathe, Kan., John Bailey of Nashville, Tenn. and Bob Bezek of Ottawa, Kan., all at two over par. Hartmann remained in first place in net scoring with the posted 69. Dennis remained tied for second with Tedd Potts of Leawood, Kan. with adjusted scores of 71.
In the 60 to 64 age group gross scoring Doug Kaup of Phillipsburg, Kan. took first place at three over par 75. Second place went to Fran Ferns of Leawood, Kan. one shot back of Kaup at four over par. David Rhodes of Olathe, Kan. finished in third with a seven over par round of 79. Net scoring resulted in Pat Goeke of Paola, Kan. taking first place honors at three under par 69. Ferns remained in second place with an adjusted score of 70 and Kaup finished in third at 73.
A one under par round of 71 gave Tim Clemons of Kansas City, Mo. first place honors in the 65 to 69 age group gross scoring. Ron Brewer of Leawood, Kan. finished at even par for second place and Roger Gemeinhardt of Olathe, Kan. finished one shot back at one over par for third. An adjusted score of nine under par 63 keep Clemons in first place for the net scoring. Fred Neuer finished second with six under par 66. Brewer and Gemeinhardt finished tied for third at four under par.
In the 70 and over age group gross scoring Fred Rowland of Leawood, Kan. shot a three over par 75 to finish in first place. At four over par Richard Markley of Cleveland, Mo. took second place. Roger Mahnke of Lenexa, Kan. finished 15 shots back of the leader at 16 over par for third place. Markley moved to first place in net scoring with an adjusted score of 68. Jerry Roberts of Olathe, Kan. moved to second at three under par and Rowland dropped to third with a one over par adjusted round of 73.
The tour next tees it up for the KGA Senior Series Championship at Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kan., Sept. 18 through the 19th. The field will be made up of qualifiers from the previous 17 events.
