Quartz reported on Monday that The Chinese government officially broadcast that ice cubes served in KFC were 12 times dirtier than toilet water, and 19 times higher than the national bacteria level standard.
A China Central Television (CCTV) reporter also took samples of ice cubes at a Chinese fast food chain Kung Fu and McDonald's and they both exceeded the national bacteria level standard, but were still cleaner than toilet water.
According to a food safety expert, the bacteria could cause dysentery and diarrhea.
Since the original report, KFC, McDonald's and Kung Fu have all apologized and vowed to clean their ice machines and bring their water to a cleaner standard.
“We are sincerely sorry that this sort of situation has occurred,” the statement read. “Our executives have reached the store to look into the case.”
The toilet water report arrives only seven months after KFC had to weather a high-profile official probe into its chicken suppliers in December. The brand took a hit and company executives apologized after Shanghai health authorities said they planned to investigate why the fast-food chain hadn’t answered questions about what it did with batches of chickens found to have excessive levels of antibiotics in 2010 and 2011.
This report isn't the first to point out the ick factor in fast-food ice, and it isn't just in China. In 2006, 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts collected ice from South Florida fast-food restaurants for her middle school science project and found 70% of the the ice was dirtier than toilet water.
