Key School 3rd grade spearheads fundraising effort for Wellness House

The 3rd graders at Key School in Annapolis are good listeners. Earlier this year when studying about conservation in their environmental science curriculum they visited a recycling center. It was there they learned that the pop tops on soda cans could be recycled for money.

The 3rd graders at Key School are socially aware.  They know that the Wellness House of Annapolis, an affiliate of Anne Arundel Medical Center, provides free support services and programs to families affected by cancer – including the family of one of their classmates.

The 3rd graders at Key School are thoughtful; and recently they came up with an idea that combines recycling and helping the Wellness House. After learning from the recycling center about how collecting pop tops could be used to raise funds, the 3rd grade students made an important connection and discovered the recipient of their fundraising efforts could be the Wellness House – a center where one of their classmates has been receiving support as his father battles cancer.

"They made a personal connection," said 3rd grade teacher Nancy Conroy. "It was an opportunity for authentic learning and it was meaningful to them."

A pop top receptacle is placed in the center of Key’s Lower School. To spread word about their effort, the third graders have made presentations to fellow students in Pre-School, Lower School and Upper School. The Wellness House hopes other schools will likewise get involved in the program.
