John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo celebrates its 49th anniversary today, Dec. 10, 2009. America's first undersea park at mile marker 102.5 oceanside offers a visitors center with aquariums and introductory film, glass bottom boat and snorkel and dive tours, a sandy beach, nature trails and camping.
"Pennekamp is the shining jewel in Key Largo's crown and is a major attraction for our area" said Key Largo Chamber of Commerce President Jackie Harder. It has about one million visitors a year, which is about 30 percent of all people who come to the Keys. That is huge!"
Park Chief Pat Wells is making plans for a grand week-long 50th anniversary celebration in December 2010.
