The Championship Bout broke all previous records on Saturday, with a sold out Key Arena. Screaming fans showed up to see their Rat City Roller Girls battle it out for the first place trophy. Special artists performed, including the Garfield High Drum Line, and an enthusiastic air band for half-time entertainment.

The first bout was a fight for third place in the grudge match of Throttle Rockets vs. Derby Liberation Front. Throttle Rockets walked away with the victory: 143-128. MVPs were Mexican Fury for DLF who skated her heart out, and Saturn Nail Ya who continued to prove her worth as a valuable jammer despite her rookie status.

The big event of the night opened with a powerful drumline and the beshrouded Grave Danger team stabbing a...giant cupcake? That probably sounded like a great idea after a few martinis at the Fun House.

Undefeated Grave Danger took on the Sockit Wenches, but right from the beginning it was clear that Sockit Wenches did not view their opponent's 5-0 record as a threat. They took an early lead, and held onto it tenaciously. Despite the high-scoring jams of Re-Animate Her and Katarina Whip, the Wenches' defense could not be beat, and they played their scoring strategy to perfection.

Grave Danger never narrowed the gap quite enough to make it look like a victory was in sight. Finally the score came out at 127-97. Although they turned in an incredible season, Grave Danger was not able to live up to their undefeated status. Still, they certainly made their mark as an amazing team. MVPs were Katarina Whip for Grave Danger and Juliet Bravo for the Sockit Wenches.

The All Star team is still competing for the WFTDA championship and another local team, Jet City Rollergirls, will be jamming this weekend in Edmonds, so there are still plenty of opportunities for fans to get their derby on!

Stay tuned for updates on the national league and Rat City All Stars.

The cupcake thing has got to be an inside joke of some sort between the two teams. A couple years ago, it evolved around penguins. Which brings a funny story or two to mind (lol). Either which way, nice article!!! And definitely go out and support Puget Sound roller derby! With teams from Centralia to Everett, there is almost always a bout on any given weekend near you!

The cupcake is indeed an inside joke. For all the teams there is a "theme" sort of thing. Sockit Wenches are big cupcake lovers... Hence the reason for Grave Danger stabbing a giant one.

As I understand it, the cupcake thing came about when Cupcake Royale became one of their team sponsors. In addition, the company donated cupcakes, which the Sockit Wenches took to handing out to fans before each bout. After awhile, it became such a crowd-pleaser that some of the Sockit Wenches started baking their own cupcakes, so they wouldn't have disappointed fans without any cupcakes. Now, it has become such a Sockit Wench tradition, that I'm not sure if Cupcake Royale even supplies any of the cupcakes anymore, but the ladies in blue always have plenty for their fans.

Anyway, that's my understanding. I'm sure someone will correct any errors I made. But the main point is, Sockit Wenches = cupcakes, and it's an excellent reasons to make sure you show up early for a bout.

thanks for the explanation, Bulldog -- we were at Sat's bouts, and were completely befuddled by the Grave Danger intros. I kept waiting for someone to jump out of the stabbed cupcake...

It was sure a fantastic evening though!

Those with a close-up view of the track could also see that Anya Heels was wearing cupcake earrings. Rat City is now sponsored by Wink Cupcakes, rather than Cupcake Royale, but the sweet theme still continues!
