Louisville Cardinals’ Kevin Ware is reported to be resting comfortably at Methodist Hospital following surgery to repair one of the most gruesome injuries ever witnessed in college basketball, or any other sport for that matter. In fact, it was so bad that it not only left fans and players on both sides of a game against Duke shocked and feeling sick, CBS and other networks decided not to show the replay during their broadcasts.
Ware, who has played a major role in Louisville’s 14-game winning streak jumped to block a three-point shot by Duke’s Tyler Thornton with 6:33 left on the clock during the first half, when he landed badly, snapping both his right tibia and fibula, which tore through his skin and hung out of his leg by about 6 inches.
Despite his excruciating pain, Ware kept yelling for his teammates to “Win the game. Win the game,” as they took him off the court. It was then that Louisville’s coach Rick Pitino tried to console his players, despite the tears in his eyes, and called on them to pull together and do just that. The team ended up earning a second straight trip to the final four with an 83-63 victory over Duke as a tribute to their injured guard.
Side note: Ware, who is originally from the Bronx, played his high school ball in Georgia, and the Final Four is in Atlanta, making the Cardinals’ victory all the more poignant for him.
