Indie Director Kevin Smith's controversial new film "Red State" was met with protests from the Westboro Baptist Church Sunday. A handful of Westboro Baptist Church activists showed up to protest Smith's new movie "Red State," a scathing satire on Christian fundamentalists making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival..
However, Smith was ready for the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) protest at the Park City, Utah location. Smith and an estimated 200 supporters launched a well thought out counter protest. Smith,an astute businessman as well as a creative force, utilized the WBC's appearance to his own advantage, creating even more buzz for his film's launch at Sundance.
"Red State" is being billed as a different kind of horror movie, a movie exploiting the horror of Christian fundamentalism and ultraconservative right wing American values. The plot centers around three teenage boys in search of sexual experience and their contact with a frightening clan of Christian extremists.
The Westboro Baptist Church, always hungry for negative attention, is notorious for its "God Hates Fags" signs and the picketing of soldier's funerals. They have made a name for themselves preaching a hate filled gospel so obnoxious most Christians reject their teaching.
In fact, the bizzaro horror thriller Red State is about a gay-hating minister (Michael Parks) and a frightening band of homophobic Christian bigots very similar to the Westboro Baptist Church and her leader, Fred Phelps.

Quite possibly the movie hits too close to home for Westboro?
The westboro babtist is not a "church", it is a hate group. They are in it for the money and the press. Most of the members of this "church" are attorneys. If any other group showed up at your door, would they get away with this? No! Why do they? Any one can say they are a "church", that is not going to make you a Church! We in this country let a lot pass for "church". This is not about freedom, it is about being human. The hate is a way to make money, by bringing a Lawsuit against people THEY have provoked. They are running a “church” scam.
You are absolutely right. It's shame that they are allowed to carry on like they do. I keep hoping they will just shut up and disappear.
LOL at Kevin Smith. Westboro is a family of left-wing attorney's led by Fred Phelps who was big in the civil rights movement but I'm sure his plot will conveniently ignore all of that.
since when are left wing attorney's Bible thumping homophobic bigots?
You mean right-wing, yeah?
Phelps is FAAAAAR from Left wing! Just because in the 60's he defended blacks in civil rights cases have nothing to do with, for one- his reason for being disbanded in Kansas (check it out, wikipedia?) He is an angry, evil and dark man.
My opinion is that the Phelp's cult will be in for a rude awakening upon meeting their Maker. I guess their Bible omits the 'love thy neighbor as thyself' passage..unless they truly hate themselves that much, as well.
"200 supporters launched a well thought out counter protest. Smith,an astute businessman as well as a creative force, utilized the WBC's appearance to his own advantage"
Well? What was it? This is the main point of the story and there re no details about Smith's counter protest activities. WTF?
