Dexys, formerly Dexys Midnight Runners are back with lead singer Kevin Rowland and a new album, entitled 'One Day I'm Going to Soar.' It is being released in the U.S. in September of 2013 on Slimstyle Records. This is Dexys' first original album release in 27 years.
They originally formed in 1978 and had their first British hit with the single "Geno," from their debut album 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' in 1980. They later became an international sensation with the 1982 release of the 'Too-Rye-Ay' album, which featured the number one international hit "Come On Eileen." After their initial success, the band recorded two more Dexys albums.
"I think I was in some ways a prisoner of my past," said Kevin Rowland about Dexys' fame. "But I'm grateful for the money we've had from it. It's opened doors for us."
Asked about his R&B musical influences, Kevin related that his favorite soul musicians were Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight. Kevin said he is also a big fan of 60's pop bands such as The Monkees and The Four Seasons. His solo covers album released in 1999, entitled 'My Beauty,' features covers of "Daydream Believer" and "Rag Doll." He stated, "I'm a big fan of pop music. We love the Four Seasons and The Monkees' songs."
About the new album Kevin stated, "I didn't just want to put out any old album, just for the sake of making an album. It had to be right. The stars aligned and it just worked. This album might have been electronic ten years ago." Kevin said that the band spent ages demoing and preparing the album until they were confident with the finished product. Dexys are excited about their first original material released since 1988.
Recently the band went on a series of successful UK tour dates. Initially released in the UK, the new album has already been hailed as a masterpiece. "'One Day I’m Going To Soar' is the soul album of the century", declared Simon Price of The Independent. Simon said the album was "a burning, vivid, typically candid record which defies the received logic that artists of that vintage can only impart placid wisdoms." The new album peaked at number 13 on the UK album chart, higher than their third album 'Don't Stand Me Down' in 1985.
'One Day I'm Going To Soar' was co-produced by co-producers Mick Talbot and Pete Schweir. It rose to the number three spot on BBC Music's Top 25 Albums of 2012. The album's first single, "Incapable of Love" features Madeleine Hyland on co-vocals and the video is embedded in this article. The follow-up, "She's Got A Wiggle" showcases Kevin Rowland's seasoned and smooth voice. Other standout tracks include "Lost," which was co-written with Blur's Alex James and "It's Ok, John Joe."
