Kevin Hart finally crosses over

For the past few years Kevin Hart has slowly been but surely risen from just a standup comedian with a few small movie roles to his name to a box office gold mine. In 2004 when Soul Plane came out, the previews focused on all of the other stars in the movie even though Hart was the main character. And while the movie was a complete and total flop, it did put his face on many people’s radar as someone to look out for.

He kept getting small roles in movies like Little Folkers, Not Easily Broken and Scary Movie 4 while also continuing to do his stand up. He released his first stand up movie I’m a Grown Little Man in 2010. His stand up tours only made his fame grow and catapulted him to the sort after actor he is today.

In 2012 Hart starred in Think Like a Man with an all star cast which included: Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall, Terrance J and Meagan Good. The movie grossed over $33 million in its first week and knocked Hunger Games out of the number one spot after its four week reign. Even though he was one of the stars, he was very memorable and made the movie.

In 2013 following the success of Think Like a Man, he released Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, another comedy special which became hit in the theatres and with the success of 2 movies, mainstream media finally knew that he was here to stay and that he wasn’t just a standup comedian.

2014 is looking to be a big year for Heart with three movies being released. The first, Ride Along which also stars Ice Cube is about Ben Barber (Hart) a security guard who joins his future brother in law, James Payton (Ice Cube) on a patrol of Atlanta to prove that he is good enough to marry James’ sister. The day of mishaps turns serious when the duo gets caught up in the case that James has been trying to close for the past 3 years. This movie was released on January 17th and in its opening weekend grossed $41 million. It was recently announced that due to the movies success, a sequel is in the works. His second movie, About Last Night, was released on Valentine’s Day and is about two couples who meet in a bar and how they try to navigate the difficulties in dating when you move too fast into a relationship. Honestly, this movie was only bearable because of Kevin Hart and Regina King. These two fed off of each other and stole all of the scenes that they were in. It felt like watching them if they really was dating and what a disaster it could be. If the movie was only about them it may have done better, but still came in second at the box office and made $25 million in its opening weekend.

Finally, he will be rejoining the all star cast of Think Like a Man for Think Like a Man Too which will take place in Vegas as everyone reunites for a wedding but goes bad quickly when nothing seems to go right. The previews look really funny and the movie will be released on June 20th which is good because this movie seems to be the perfect summer movie: light, fun and not too complicated.

Kevin Hart has gone from a regular, funny standup comedian to a box office king and it only seems like he is just getting started. One thing for certain, he is having his moment and has finally earned the respect he deserves from the mainstream media who not only now knows his name, they can’t get enough of it.
