It is fitting that on Martin Luther King Day holiday weekend, a debut comedy starring two African-American actors has soared to the top. It was indeed a good weekend for Kevin Hart, Ice Cube and their film “Ride Along”. According to Fox News on Jan. 19, the Universal Pictures film has taking first place over the holiday weekend in revenue.
The Kevin Hart movie opened to $14.4 million on Friday and is expected to earn about $40 million over the holiday weekend making the film possibly the second highest MLK holiday weekend performance. “Ride Along” tops another Universal film “Lone Survivor”, which is on its second weekend and putting in another strong performance at the movie theaters.
The movie is Hart’s first turn as a lead in a movie and starring opposite Ice Cube, who has been strong in prior comedy movie performance, the movie has drawn in huge numbers form the female and African-American demographics with 57 percent of female viewers and 50 percent of African-Americans making up the total audience for the film that cost $25 million to make.
The action comedy is already brining in huge profits for Universal and will most likely just be the start of a string of lead roles for Kevin Hart.
