Kevin Hart brings limelight to more black female comedians, comedic actresses

It may have taken "Saturday Night Live" seven years to find a funny, African-American female comedian who was ready for skit TV, but in the meantime funny man Kevin Hart continues to introduce funny women on his fake TV reality show "Real Husbands of Hollywood" and in his Valentine's Day film "About Last Night."

After the hilarious skit Regina Hall did during an interview for "Think Like a Man," it was a shoo-in that she'd play an outstanding girlfriend role for Hart. But were fans still shocked to see her as the lead role in "About Last Night"? Instead of just laughing about how great the two were together, Hart brought it to fruition.

What's so genius about what Kevin Hart has been doing over the past several years is he's subtle about his introductions. There is no big sign that says, "Look, here's another one. Look at her go!" These actresses and comedians aren't playing the stereotypical roles of what Hollywood thinks black women should act like. Working with Hart has given them the flexibility to expand on their comedy and bring it to a broader audience. These women just show up onscreen and make people cry with laughter.

Hart isn't the first to do it. Comedians Martin Lawrence, the Wayans brothers and Bill Cosby introduced tremendous (both comedic and serious) talent on their shows.

Even with the sophistication of Phylicia Rashad, "The Cosby Show" viewers would see the queen of TV moms Claire Huxtable cut up every once in awhile. On "Real Husbands of Hollywood," there was no question that Tisha Campbell could get a few chuckles. Damon Wayans grabbed her up quickly for "My Wife and Kids" once she left "Martin." But who knew actresses who almost always played serious roles were this funny?
