Friday afternoon, BP announced that they are teaming up with Kevin Costner and his Ocean Therapy Solutions company to help rid the Gulf of Mexico of oil spilled water. Kevin Costner developed a machine that recycles and separates oil from water with a 99.9% success rate, and BP plans to place those machines in the Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill.
BP purchased 32 of the machines from Ocean Therapy Solutions, and Kevin Costner’s company promised that the machines would be ready to go within 60 days. Financial details about the transaction were not released.
"At its core, my dream, this machine, was designed ... to give us a fighting chance to fight back the oil that's got us by the throat," Costner said Friday.
"When you are in a fight, anybody knows you go to confront it right where it is. You don't wait for it to come to your door," Costner said.
In May, BP asked for 6 of Costner’s machines to be flown to the Gulf to be tested. BP ordered 32 of the machines to help with the oil spill along the Gulf coast. 32 machines will process about 6 million gallons of water each day, according to Costner.
Last week, Costner testified in front of Congress about the machines and said that over the years he has had a difficult time getting government interest to buy the machines. He said he demonstrated the machine for the Coast Guard, private companies, and the government, but no one was interested.
“My enthusiasm for the machine was met with apathy,” said Costner.
Costner said “that as long as the oil industry profits from the sea, they have an obligation to protect it.” He went on to say that the cleaning devices “should be on every ship transporting oil, they should be on every derrick, they should be in every harbor.”
