Minnesota based production company, Kenzie Productions, founded by yours truly, is developing a Christian-themed romantic dramedy called Away. The movie is a significant (and welcomed) departure from Kenzie Productions' 2008 thriller, Horror House.
I was blessed throughout the creation of Horror House. From development to pre-production to production to post-production, things came together in ways that have to be attributed to divine guidance. The end product certainly wasn't what I'd hoped it would be, but cutting my teeth on a cheap thriller like Horror House was great preparation for jumping into a more worthy project like Away.
Moving up the proverbial ladder brings fresh challenges, the most significant of which at this point is finances. Unlike more established Hollywood players, I don't have the money to pay my lawyer and get a business plan into the hands of potential financiers.
It would be easy to fall into the trap of complaining that the "haves" continue to rule the cineplexes while us "have-nots" are unable to even get anything off the ground. But thanks to crowd funding websites like Kickstarter, the financially challenged creative types like myself are able to reach out and begin to bridge the gap between the money holders and the money seekers.
I've personally pledged to a handful of projects through Kickstarter and other outlets. While I haven't been able to offer as much as I'd like, it's rewarding to know I'm playing a small part in helping others realize their dreams. As a working actor/writer/director/producer who's been in this game for more than a decade, I'm reaching out for others to help me realize my dreams. Every little bit helps and every little bit is appreciated.
