Kenya's bus explosion that occurred in northeastern Nairobi left at least four people dead and 36 injured. Reportedly, the bus explosion was caused by an attack with a grenade. According to a Dec. 14 report from USA Today, the explosion happened as the bus was traveling through a Somalia-dominant area of Nairobi, Kenya.

Regarding the Kenya bus explosion scene, Mohammed Dahir, a journalist who witnessed the incident, told Al Jazeera: "The bus is shredded into pieces. There's a body next to the bus as well. A lot of people have been taken to nearby hospitals."

Officials with several agencies in Kenya are currently investigating the bus explosion and it is still unclear if the explosive device was thrown onto or already on the bus.

"We want to establish if the attacker was in the vehicle or if it was thrown at it," said Benson Kibue, Nairobi area police chief.

The Kenya bus explosion incident took place in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi, which has heavy presence of Somalia's al Shabaab Islamist group. This the same group that is responsible for the shooting spree that killed over 60 people in a Nairobi shopping mall in Sept. of this year.

Saturday's bus explosion in Kenya comes just a day after a grenade attack occurred on a market in Wajir, in northeast Kenya near the Somali border. Reuters reports that masked men threw two grenades into an unsuspecting crowd. The attack killed one person and seriously injured several others.

Police suspect that the terrorist group Al-Shabaab was involved in the Kenya bus explosion. However, this has not been confirmed as of yet. The militia announced its allegiance with al-Qaeda in 2012 and the group conntrols large areas of central and southern Somalia where the fragile Somali government is still unable to impose its authority.

Somalia has been in a state of civil war and chaos since 1991, which is shortly after dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted by opposition groups. Following Barre's removal from power, the country was left without an effective government and into the hands of Islamist militias, warlords and gangs of armed criminals.
