Horse racing fans are ready for the Triple Crown season to get underway, and as such, there’s lots of excitement leading up to post time for the 2014 Kentucky Derby. As reported by the LA Times on April 30, the official post positions draw will be broadcast tonight on NBC Sports (National TV) and streaming live on NBC’s Live Stream page (online).

Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., will host this annual tradition beginning at 5 p.m. EST (4 p.m. CST/3 p.m. MST/2 p.m. PST). This year, there are 21 three-year-olds lined up for a shot at the 140th Run for the Roses, but with only 20 spots available, someone will be the odd horse out.

This year’s Kentucky Derby field is highlighted by California Chrome, who’s been the outright favorite following his win at the Santa Anita Derby in earlier this month. Trained by Art Sherman, the California-bred colt comes in unbeaten in four starts, and will be hoping for a favorable post position in today’s proceeding.

Kevin Martin of CBS Sports is onboard with the son of Lucky Pulpit’s chances to win the first leg of the Triple Crown. In his latest horse racing report, he predicts that California Chrome will shine the brightest on the evening of May 3.

Most 2014 Kentucky Derby oddsmakers around the country agree, giving the Steven Coburn/Perry Martin product the nod by a wide margin. With one more hurdle to clear, Sherman – who’s looking to become the oldest trainer to win the Derby (77-years-old) – will be paying very close attention to which post position California Chrome draws in this afternoon’s televised/live streaming NBC event.

“I probably thought I’d never get here with the kind of horse that I have,” he told the NY Daily News. “It never bothered me because I love the game. If it happens, it happens. I’ve always been the guy if its fate I’m all for it.”

However, trying to prevent stop fate from smiling in Sherman’s direction will be 19 other thoroughbreds on Saturday night (Post time scheduled: 6:24 p.m. ET). Not only conventional wisdom, but also history suggests that drawing a favorable post position makes all the difference on a track like Churchill Downs.

Finally, it’s worth taking a look at the 21 horses that are vying for a spot in the 2014 Kentucky Derby and their horse-racing betting odds to become an instant household name. However, do keep in mind that one of these contenders will be eliminated during this afternoon’s post positions TV/live streaming draw:
