Kenny Smith in Cincinnati at The Funny Bone on the Levee

“Everything is funny for a second,” says comedian Kenny Smith. “Everyone should laugh at everything, even the tragic stuff. For a second, then it’s not funny” He elaborates; “if I saw a guy walking across the street and a van hit him I’d be like ‘ha, ha, ha---oh, s***! That guy just got hit by a van! That’s when I’d help him. ‘Buddy, you o.k? Get an ambulance! Hey, that was funny as hell for a second.” A regular on The Bob & Tom Show, Smith has been a fixture on college campuses for several years now, and is starting to become a draw at comedy clubs across the country. Perhaps it’s those university gigs that have made him more socially conscious. “Don’t say the ‘n-word’ white people, no matter how many CDs you have, no matter how many jersey’s you have. ‘Black people say it,’ well, that’s the rule. Black people have had a hard enough time, not you in your Fubu shirt and big pants, cut it out. I don’t even say nickel anymore, it’s too close. I say ‘gimme five cents.’”

Kenny Smith performs at The Funny Bone on the Levee Saturday September 4 at 7:30 and 10:00. Tickets are $14.00 funnybone.com 859-957-2000
