Kenny Rogers boasts an impressive musical career that spans over seven decades, something almost unheard of in recent years. On Oct. 8, the icon will be returning in a big way with "You Can't Make Old Friends," a new project on Warner Bros. Records, which also features a duet with the equally legendary Dolly Parton on the album's title track. Nearly 30 years ago (to the day), Rogers and Parton released "Islands In The Stream," a song that has certainly stood the test of time.
"What a thrill it was for me to work again with my buddy, Dolly Parton, and what a special song,” Rogers noted in a statement. “Working with Dolly is always a little like going home. Everything felt comfortable."
Working with such producers as Kyle Lehning, Warren Hartman and Dann Huff, "You Can’t Make Old Friends" is the singer's first release since 2006's "Water & Bridges."
He continues, "I can honestly say this may be the best album I've ever recorded. The musical diversity is extraordinary. It goes from songs I would normally sing, to songs I would normally never even listen to. In this business, you do albums to both grow artistically, and for the sheer love of music. We chose what I think are the most diverse and best songs I've ever had access to."
In addition to story songs and love songs Rogers has previously explored in his songbook, the new album showcases a flair for rock and roll, soul, gospel, southern rock, zydeco and various Southwest sounds.
