Winnpeg's resident noise trio, KEN mode will hit the Treasure Valley on March 3, with Chicago's Russian Circles and Richmond, Virginia's Inter Arma. KEN mode received critical acclaim in 2013 for its fifth studio album, "Entrench". The show will take place at the Neurolux Lounge on Monday, March 3. Tickets for the show are only $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

This week The Examiner connected with drummer Shane Matthewson to talk about making the new record, the impact of the band’s new bassist, and his unnatural love of Tina Fey.

KEN mode; the KEN meaning–kill everyone now, was formed in 1999 by the Matthewson brothers, Jesse (vocals, guitar) and Shane (drums), along with former bassist, Darryl Laxdal. KEN mode has released five studio albums to date beginning with “Mongrel” in 2003 through there most recent, “Entrench“, last year. The latter marks the band’s first for new bassist Andrew LaCour and the first on Season of Mist records. Seattle’s Matt Bayles (Soundgarden, Mastodon, Pearl Jam) produced the new record, and Shane talks about having more time on this record and working with Bayles as well as producer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Skeletonwitch, Kvelertak) on their previous record, “Venerable“.

Shane and Jesse were recently interviewed by Forbes Magazine on how their respective backgrounds in accounting and marketing play into the band’s success, as well as their ability to focus on KEN mode full-time. Shane found humor in doing the Forbes piece and shared that when it comes down to it, most of the time it is “guess and test” and hope for the best.

Matthewson also talked about having extra time in the studio for the “Entrench“, how Andrew’s writing style fit into the band, and his strange fascination with comedy and comedians. Check out the full interview above and catch KEN mode on March 3 at the Neurolux..

Russian Circles, who is scheduled to headline the evening's festivities, is a three-piece instrumental rock/metal band. The trio play instrumental, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal, to soft delicate passages.Russian Circles was formed in 2004 and has released five albums to date and are currently touring in support of the most recent effort, "Memorial" released in October, 2013. Russian Circles features Mike Sullivan (guitar), Colin DeKuiper (bass), and Dave Turncrantz (drums).

Inter Arma will hit the American highways once again to supply their organic, blackened, doom-ridden metal across the eastern two-thirds of the country. While still touring in support of the critically-lauded "Sky Burial" album, the name of Inter Arma's recently recorded EP has been unveiled as well. The expansive, solitary track, "The Cavern," encompasses a sprawling forty minutes of material. The recording process, including guest appearances from members of USX, Windhand, Yautja, and more, is nearly complete, as is a majority of the mixing, all completed amidst the dispatching of a seemingly insurmountable number of beers throughout the duration. A final release date and further details on "The Cavern" EP will be released upon its completion.
