Actor Ken Howard has been voted to lead the SAG-AFTRA union, easily beating his opponent actor Esai Morales, on Aug. 15, 2013. Howard is the first elected president of the newly formed SAG-AFTRA and will serve the actor's union for a period of two years. Along with Howard's election, actress Amy Aquino has been elected as secretary-treasurer. Their term starts immediately.
Ballots were mailed to SAG-AFTRA members on July 16 and were given the choice of Ken Howard, Esai Morales, Paul Edney and Marily Monrovia to serve as president. Howard receive the highest number of votes (16,396 votes) and actor Esai Morales came in second with 9,850 votes. Amy Aquino received 17,590 votes for the position of secretary-treasurer and Jane Austin came in second with 10,662 votes.
“I'm gratified that members across the country have reelected me to lead our union and continue building on the strong foundation we created through merger. I want to congratulate Secretary-Treasurer Amy Aquino on her reelection and offer my sincere thanks to all the candidates who ran for office. I look forward to joining the delegates who will assemble in Los Angeles for the first SAG-AFTRA convention in late September, and then moving forward with the new leadership team to do the important work that members have entrusted to us,” said the newly elected president of the SAG-AFTRA union.
Secretary-Treasurer Amy Aquino added, “This is an extremely exciting time for our union, and I’m deeply grateful to my fellow members for their vote of confidence in what we’ve already achieved, and for the continued opportunity to help focus SAG-AFTRA’s resources to build the effective organization that we all need and deserve.”
Ken Howard has been a working actor in Hollywood for over 40 years. He is an Emmy and Tony Award winner and is known for his role in the television series "The White Shadow," and recurring roles on "30 Rock," "Dynasty," "Melrose Place" and "Crossing Jordan."
Aquino has been acting for more than 20 years. Her television and film appearance include: "Moonstruck," "Glee," "Law & Order," "Castle," "Monk," "ER," "CSI" and "Everybody Loves Raymond."
