There's one thing we can always rely upon while watching rally, someone is going to wreck. This time, it was Ken Block with navigator Alex Gelsomino after hitting a pool of slush and water. The conditions of Greystoke Forest were horrible, as it was a mixture of snow, ice, slush, water, and mud. Slush is one of the toughest conditions because it acts like water, but pulls ten times harder. If any of you have hit a puddle of slush while traveling down the road, you totally understand. Now multiply that by speeds in excess of 90 mph while driving down what's meant to be a cart path and you can totally see why he wrecked.
There's a lot of buzz on the web today about Ken Block being a "fake" rally car driver, in that he bought his way onto the rally circuit and isn't a real rally driver. Sure there is a big difference between Gymkhana and rally, but give the guy a break. There's only a few drivers who are naturally talented at rallycross, the rest of us have to learn the hard way. Even though he's wrecked a few cars this year, I say Ken Block is off to a good start and I look forward to watching more races; or wrecks. Either way, there's nothing better than watching Block rip it up in a rally car.
