Kelly Rowland has confirmed that she is engaged to her manager Tim Witherspoon. The couple reportedly began dating each other in 2011. On Dec. 17, 2013, "The Queen Latifah Show" released video footage of Rowland being interviewed by Queen Latifah. During the interview, Rowland talked publicly for the first time about her engagement and showed her engagement ring on TV. The interview will be televised on Dec. 18, 2013.
When Queen Latifah asked Rowland to set the record straight about reports that she is engaged, Rowland smiled, showed her engagement ring, and said: "He put a ring on it."
Rowland giggled as she talked about her engagement: "It's been a while. We kept it very, very low — for years, to be completely honest ... It happened on Skype. He asked me first on Skype. And I was like, 'We're so far away from each other!'"
Rowland added, "I was in Bulgaria somewhere. It was so late. I remember honestly just staring at each other. And he asked me. It was so simple to say yes. I've got my best friend to ride through life with. He really is my best friend."
During the interview, Queen Latifah mentioned that she knew about the engagement for a long time but respected Rowland's wish to keep it a secret.
If Rowland kept her engagement a secret for all this time, why did she choose this week to reveal that she's engaged? Well, it happens to be the week of the Season 3 finale of "The X Factor" U.S., which airs in two parts on Dec. 18 and Dec. 19, 2013. Rowland, who became a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. this year, is the "X Factor" mentor of one of contestants (Jeff Gutt) in the finale. The extra publicity she'll get for announcing her engagement is "convenient."
If Rowland gets married, one person who may not be at the wedding is Rowland's estranged father, Charles Lovett.
Lovett (who says that he has not spoken to Rowland since she was 7) told Star magazine in an October 2013 interview: "So many previous years have passed and I'm getting old. I just pray she comes back into my life before it's too late."
In the interview, Lovett admits that his split from Rowland's mother Doris was because he had a bad temper and a drinking problem at the time. He said of his temper, "I couldn't control it. I hoped I could make it up to her. But I'm still waiting for that day."
Even though Kelly Rowland said in 2011 that she wanted to reunite that year with her estranged father, she says she is still not speaking to him, even after he publicly begged her to forgive him for being an absentee dad for most of her life. As previously reported, Rowland made the comments in an interview published in Essence magazine's September 2013 issue, which had Rowland on the cover. The issue went on sale on Aug. 9, 2013.
Rowland (who is 32) rose to fame as a member of the singing group Destiny's Child, which first hit it big in the late 1990s. She was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. for just one year (2011), when she replaced Dannii Minogue. Rowland has denied tabloid reports that she was fired from "The X Factor" U.K. because she asked for too much money. Rowland said that she left the show because she wanted to spend more time on recording her fourth solo album. She became a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2013, when she replaced Britney Spears.
Shortly after Rowland became a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2011, Rowland's father, Charles Lovett, gave an interview to the Daily Mirror to beg for her forgiveness and ask for a reunion. In the Daily Mirror interview, Lovett said that he does not want any money or favors from her. During her adolescence and teen years, Rowland lived with the family of Beyoncé Knowles, her group mate in Destiny's Child.
Lovett also told the Daily Mirror that he once went to a Destiny's Child concert in 2000 and tried to get backstage to talk to his daughter, but he was turned away by security.
Although Rowland told the media in 2011 that she forgave her father and that she hoped to reunite with him during the Christmas holidays that year, she confessed in her Essence interview that the reunion did not happen that year, and she still can't bring herself to communicate with her father.
When Essence asked if she has spoken to her father since his attempts to contact her through the media, Rowland admitted, "I haven't. I don't know what's stopping me because I've had opportunities. But it really is time. I probably need to ask my therapist about it."
Rowland's father may not be at her wedding, but former Destiny's Child members Knowles and Michelle Williams should be, since Rowland has remained on good terms with both of them.
As for her relationship with Witherspoon, Rowland has gone to great lengths not to discuss it too much in the media. In interviews, she does not mention his name when she is asked about the special man in her life.
In a June 2013 interview on "The Wendy Williams Show," Rowland commented about her love life and said she had a serious boyfriend but refused to name him in the interview.
Rowland laughed sheepishly as she said, "I am dating."
Wendy Williams asked, "Do you love him?"
Rowland answered, "I do. I do want to get married. I feel like I'm missing out!"
In her interview with Essence, Rowland also declined to say who her boyfriend is. But she did repeat her wish to be a wife and mother someday: "I want to be in Miami chilling with a cute little tummy and wearing cute little dresses on the beach. And I want to be married. I do."
Rowland used to be engaged to football player Roy Williams (they broke up in 2005), who tweeted shortly after Rowland's song "Dirty Laundry" made headlines in May 2013 that he wasn't the abusive ex-boyfriend described in the song. But in a follow-up tweet, Roy Williams hinted that the abusive ex-boyfriend was Cudda Love, CEO of Fo' Real Entertainment, according to Baller Alert. When someone tweeted Roy Williams and guessed that the abuser was Cudda Love, Roy Williams replied: "#bingo. But thats not my place to speak on it .. #somanystoriespeoplejustdontknowabout."
When Wendy Williams (no relation to Roy Williams or former Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams) asked Rowland about Roy Williams, Rowland refused to talk about him and said, "Been there, done that. Ex talk is ex talk. I don't even want to [go] there. It's not worth talking about. Sorry."
