Kelly Ripa's trainer shares workout and diet secrets for her rippling abs

Kelly Ripa has insanely chiseled abs and a super-toned body, thanks to a healthy diet and rigorous workouts.

"I’ve been training Kelly for three years," fitness coach Anna Kaiser of AKT In Motion told Shape. "She works out four to five days per week for 90 minutes per session."

Kaiser said Ripa's total-body workout combines intense cardio exercise with plyometric and flexibility moves.

Two days a week it will be high reps, low weight. The other two days it will be high weight, low reps.

All days will include both cardio and flexibility, but we’ll switch up the body parts we focus on. Sometimes it’s full body, another time it might be upper body or biceps/triceps. It always has to change. If you’re always doing the same thing, your body will start getting used to that."

Kelly is a longtime workout fanatic who also runs three to five miles several days a week and takes spinning classes. The mom of three said she needs to exercise a lot to calm her mind because she's a chronic worrier.

"I work out every day. It's part of my life," said Kelly, 43. "I do it more for my insides than my outside, but the outside gets a nice benefit, too. I feel like my mind is a little quieter when I exercise."

Ripa started training with Kaiser in 2010 to consolidate her various workouts into one session. "She’s much too busy to be running around doing a yoga class at one place and a barre or a spin class in the other," said Kaiser.

"So for her, it was mostly about combining all that and getting more cardio into her life, leaning herself out a little, and there were also certain parts of her body that were either overdeveloped or de-conditioned."

Ripa's diet focuses on organic vegetables, salads, omega-3-rich fatty fish, and eliminates sugar and processed foods. She's not vegetarian but calls herself a "vegetarian who occasionally eats sushi."

"Kelly is very knowledgeable about nutrition," said Kaiser. "She knows what’s good for her and loves veggies and eating healthy. She will eat throughout the day but always in moderation."

Kaiser said the No. 1 secret for getting Ripa's amazing abs isn't through crunches, but by losing belly fat. "You’re not going to get abs by doing a bunch of crunches," she said. "If you want to see your abs, you have to lose fat."

Kaiser said the best thing about working out with Kelly is her incredible discipline and motivation. "She’s so driven, present, excited, and focused," said Kaiser.

"It’s really every trainer’s dream for their client to want it as badly as you want it for them, and she really puts in the work. She doesn’t expect instant results yet still is so focused, committed, and intense about her fitness."
