Kelly Osbourne shares sugar-free low carb diet secrets: How she lost 69 pounds

The once chubby Kelly Osbourne has lost 69 pounds since her highest weight, she told Cosmopolitan. Her secrets range from becoming a fitness fanatic to her boyfriend, who just happens to be a vegan chef, to a low-carb, high protein diet.

Kelly began her weight loss journey on "Dancing with the Stars," when her partner told her to follow a high protein, low carb diet for energy. The result: Weight loss and the realization, Kelly told Cosmo, that "diet and exercise really work!'"

And then came her vegan chef boyfriend Matthew Mosshart. "Over the past two years, I've lost over four-and-a-half stone - but I've only lost the last stone since I met Matthew," Kelly explained to the Daily Mail. "That's because he cooks for me! He's a vegan chef, so he makes sure that I eat healthily." Her diet now includes veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds, and she exercises regularly.

Can you follow a vegan diet when you're on a low-carb plan? That's a frequently asked question, and the answer is "yes, as long as you plan carefully."

But a lot of weight loss has to do with determination.

Or, as Kelly says: "There is no secret." She told an Us Weekly reporter that she has made a commitment to herself to stay on track with her diet. According to the reporter, Kelly's diet focuses on low-carb, sugar-free eating. For fitness, she works out for an hour each time three days a week with a trainer, then does 30-minute intervals on a treadmill on the other days.

Working out on your own or with a trainer for an hour three times a week offers a great way to challenge your body. You can improve your flexibility, balance, strength, cardiovascular system, and coordination by doing a wide range of exercises each time.

If you've never used weights before, it may be worth it to invest in a few sessions with a personal fitness trainer. Make sure you get someone who is qualified - ask to see his or her credentials. One of the best ways to find someone: ask friends for recommendations.

For the cardio portion of your workout, a treadmill, such as Kelly's choice, is also a good option. You can run or walk three to four times a week for half an hour, watching your favorite TV show or a DVD, and be entertained while you exercise. Can't afford a treadmill? Use walking in your neighborhood or at a school as a free way to get in shape.

Make a Commitment

One of Kelly's best quotes that reveals just how much she has changed is this one, which she made to an Us magazine reporter: "A diet will never change you. You have to change yourself. You have to say, "I'm just not going to do that anymore."

In other words, whatever your diet downfall may be (chocolate? ice cream? A giant bowl of buttered popcorn each night before bed?), vowing to go on a diet won't automatically make you stop your habit. You have to want to make that change - and then, like Kelly, you can succeed dramatically!
